The Jews who were not persuaded, becoming envious, took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, “These who have turned the world upside down have come here too,” (Acts 17:5-6, NKJV).
When I was a small child (in the late 50’s) it was normal to pray in school (also pledge allegiance to the flag). And during the social revolution of the 60’s Christians were ridiculed, but not hated. In the 70’s we were called Jesus Freaks—a name that many of us actually embraced (I did!). But then something started to change. I will never forget the first time I heard someone say that she can’t stand the sight of a Bible in someone’s house (can you imagine saying that to your host?)—I was shocked. And now there are people who say that the world would be a better place without Christians.
But in this morning’s Bible reading I found hope:
The day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming, (2 Peter 3:10-12, emphasis mine).
My heart leaped in hope at the thought! We can speed the coming of Jesus’ return! And when I asked the Lord how, He led me to this passage:
Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in, and in this way all Israel will be saved. (Romans 11:25b-26a, emphasis mine).
We can speed the return of Jesus by sharing the Gospel! So get out there, my friends! Share the Good News with all Creation! Let’s complete the number of the Gentiles and speed Jesus’ return! I don’t know about you, but our wedding day is not something that I want to put off, not even one single day. Let’s go turn the world upside down! God is good!
